Citrasteel 2® Buffered Passivation Concentrate: Modern Passivation for Stainless-Steel Excellence
Citrasteel 2® Buffered Passivation Concentrate, from Alconox, LLC, represents the next generation in stainless-steel passivation—delivering ASTM A967–compliant performance with the safety, selectivity, and environmental responsibility that modern facilities demand.

Why Citric-Acid Passivation is the Smarter Choice
For decades, nitric-acid passivation was the industry standard. But technology has advanced—and citric-acid formulations now offer a superior, safer, and greener approach.
-
Selective Iron Removal: Citric acid removes iron and iron oxides more precisely than nitric acid, creating a chromium-enriched surface and a stronger, more corrosion-resistant chromium-oxide layer.
-
No Hazardous Shipping: Citrasteel 2 concentrate ships non-hazmat—unlike nitric acid—reducing regulatory and logistics costs.
-
Environmentally Responsible: Nitric acid requires neutralization before disposal, while in many municipalities Citrasteel 2 can be safely discharged to drain (following local regulations). Shipped as a concentrate, used at 10%.
-
Safer to Handle: Nitric acid can cause severe burns; Citrasteel 2 offers a much safer handling profile.

Proven Efficacy – ASTM A967 Compliance
Citrasteel 2 meets and exceeds ASTM A967 requirements for stainless-steel passivation. By selectively removing free iron while preserving chromium, it enables stainless steel to form a natural, self-healing oxide film even after machining or welding.
Oxygen in the air reacts with the chromium-rich surface to form a self-healing oxide layer that protects stainless steel from corrosion.
Non-Hazardous Shipping Classification
